The website you’re reading is where we keep the things that don’t change often — class details, fees, policies, our constitution. Facebook is where we want the week-to-week life of the school to happen: reminders, photos, event news, and the occasional bit of Hungarian to keep you on your toes.
If you haven’t visited the page before, three posts sit pinned at the top. Between them they answer most of what people ask us.
“Welcome to the Hungarian Community School, Adelaide Inc.”
The short introduction. More than 60 years of teaching in South Australia, the state’s only registered and accredited Hungarian language school, and every one of our teachers a native Hungarian speaker giving their time as a volunteer. It also mentions the thing we’re proudest of: Australia is the only country in the world where a student can finish high school with a Hungarian language qualification that counts toward their university entrance score — and this school was central to making that possible.
“Our Story”
The longer version — where the school came from. Adelaide’s Hungarian community grew in two waves, first in the late 1940s and early 1950s, then again after the 1956 Revolution, when many Hungarians left their homeland and rebuilt their lives here. The school was founded from within that community by volunteers who understood that language is the heart of cultural identity. We’ve been non-profit and volunteer-staffed from the very beginning — no shareholders, no profit motive, just a commitment to passing Hungarian on to the next generation. The full version is on our Our Story page.
“What We Offer”
The practical one. Primary classes online, grouped by ability rather than by year level. Years 7–12 online, available anywhere in Australia, and counting toward the ATAR for South Australian students as a SACE Stage 1 and 2 subject. Adult classes on Monday evenings at Brighton Secondary School, 6:00–8:00pm during school terms, open to everyone from absolute beginners to people brushing up on the language they grew up hearing. Current fees are set out on the Classes page.
What’s on right now
Our Graduation Ball is on Saturday 7 November 2026 — see the save the date post for details.
We’re also asking past and present students to leave us a Google review. If the school meant something to you, a few sentences takes two minutes and genuinely helps other families find us.
